Tour 3A – Potsdamer Platz & its poets
Potsdamer Platz is one of the most attractive squares in all of the city, not least because of its famous new architecture. We follow the tracks of writer and flaneur Franz Hessel and other writers explaining the lively place (e.g. in the Roaring Twenties) before and after WW II. Although the luxury hotels, « beer palaces » and other places of public entertainment attended by tourists and Berliners alike have mostly vanished, the old times take shape with remnants of the Hotel Esplanade or the oldest business building, Whine House Huth, the last witness to Kaiserzeit, cold war and the death zone in the very heart of Berlin.
Selected texts from Theodor Fontane, Franz Hessel, Erich Kästner, Peter Handke et al.
