Tour 1 – Kurfürstendamm Walking Tour
We will start visiting the Breitscheidplatz with Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church that used to be the landmark of the former City West and still serves as an anti-war memorial to peace and reconciliation. From here, we walk down the elegant shopping lane with its beautiful side streets and fashion designer shops – the perfect place to see and be seen. At the New Kudamm Corner on Joachimstaler Straße, an interesting example of urban planning in the 1950s is to be seen: a historic ensemble of traffic platform, newspaper kiosk, and public toilets. At the opposite corner, we find the traditional coffee house Kranzler which was a major tourist attraction during cold war times and symbolizes the Berliners’ will to rebuild the city in the post-war reconstruction era.
The Kurfürstendamm used to be the centre of West Berlin but had fallen behind the historical city in East Berlin after the fall of the Wall. Now the spotlight has shifted and West Berlin is about to regain its true standing.
