Tour 2 – Walk the Berlin Wall
Today genuine sections of the real Wall are nearly non-existent. Starting from the ancient Bornholmer Straße border-crossing, remnants of the hinterland Wall and placards commemorate the night of 9 November 1989 when this was the first checkpoint to open up its turnpikes allowing 20,000 East Berliners to cross the border that very night. Afterwards, we will visit parts of the Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße where in 1961 the wall was erected tearing families apart and bricking the front entrances and windows of the apartment buildings standing there. The outdoor exhibition impressively conveys how the West was sealed off from the East and shows a preserved piece of the border fortification with death strip and watch tower as well as excavations of the house foundations.
