Tour 1A – Kurfürstendamm Literary Tour
In the course of urban development, Charlottenburg evolved into a residential area in the New West of Berlin where chancellor Otto von Bismarck embellished the former bridlepath Kurfürstendamm as a boulevard following the example of the Champs-Elysées in 1886. The development was accompanied by the opening of theaters and coffee houses, cinemas and bars. The German Avantgarde with painters like Max Liebermann; Käthe Kollwitz, Heinrich Zille and writers like Alfred Döblin, Gottfried Benn, Else Lasker-Schüler, Josef Roth and Bertolt Brecht frequented the coffee houses at Kurfürstendamm which became the center of leisure and nightlife during the days of the Golden Twenties.
Selected texts from Sven Regener, Dieter Hildebrandt, Sigfried Kracauer, Wolfgang Koeppen, Curt Riess et al.
